What is anti-social behaviour?

Anti-social behaviour can be defined as:

“Acting in a manner that causes or is likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress to one or more persons not of the same household, or to local communities or the environment.”

Anti-social behaviour can include anything from generating loud noise to incidents defined as criminal behaviour such as violence towards a person or property.  A person acting in an anti-social manner may or may not be one of our clients, even though the behaviour directly affects our residents.

Some examples of anti-social behaviour are:

  • noise nuisance or pollution
  • pet nuisance including barking or fouling
  • youth nuisance
  • threatening or aggressive behaviour or language
  • violence against a person or property
  • negative behaviour that targets specific groups of people
  • vehicle issues such as uninsured, defective or abandoned vehicles

Reporting anti-social behaviour

You can report anti-social behaviour through our online form.

In order for us to fully investigate reports of anti-social behaviour it is important that you provide as much information as possible before submitting your report.

How we will deal with anti-social behaviour complaints

If the complaint is of a minor nature we will firstly try to deal with it by writing to or speaking to the resident concerned.

If the complaint is more serious and the police are involved, then the complaint will be logged as being with the police.  Even if the police are involved, you should still report the incident so we can log it with the relevant Police Log Number.

You should report ongoing incidents individually so that a history of events can be collected.  This allows us to gather a factual evidence trail so that appropriate action can be taken.

In most cases of anti-social behaviour, once it is brought to the offender’s attention it is often resolved. However, if it does continue, we will involve the relevant partners to help in resolving the situation.  If necessary, we may seek court action to resolve the problem. This can take time and is why we work so closely with the police and other agencies throughout the process.

What to do if a crime is being committed

You should first report the incident to the police on 612612, and then report it to us, with as much detail as possible and with the Police Log Number.

If you wish to remain anonymous, you should contact Crimestoppers free of charge on 0800 555 111. Crimestoppers allows you to anonymously give information to the police that may help solve a crime. When you contact Crimestoppers you will never be asked for your name or address, and your call cannot be traced.

Anti-social behaviour affects individuals, families and communities alike. Working with our clients and other agencies to reduce antisocial behaviour has a positive effect in helping to make our communities safer and better places to live.
