Jersey Housing Laws
If you’re moving to or relocating within the Channel Islands, it is important for you to know the housing and residency laws. These laws were put in place to protect the resident, tenants, property owners, and landlords. At Columbia Estates, we want all our tenants to know and assert their given residency rights so that they are, at all times, happy and confident with our services.
The Jersey Residential Tenancy Law is applicable to all current leases, changed and renewed, and new leases on self-contained residential properties such as flats, bedsits, and rental homes. The leases can be on a week to week basis, or a fixed lease of up to nine years. Under the law, each residential property must contain each of the following:
- Bed/sleeper couch
Under the Residential Tenancy Law of Jersey, the tenant is entitled to:
- Obtain a signed copy of the fully signed lease and all of its versions.
- Obtain a copy of the paid deposit receipt.
- Live in the dwelling without interference from the landlord unless criminal activities are perpetrated by the tenant.
- Withhold part of the rent if the dwelling is, not by action or inaction of the tenant, uninhabitable.
